One such example is the Banaue Rice Terraces, often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. These terraces were carved into mountainsides by indigenous tribes over 2,000 years ago. This walled city was built during Spanish colonization and served as a fortress for protecting the ruins against foreign invasions. Within its walls are well-preserved structures like Fort Santiago and San Agustin Church – both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Exploring Intramuros allows visitors to step back in time and experience firsthand how life was during this period. Moving further south, we find ourselves in Cebu where Magellan’s Cross stands proudly at Magellan’s Shrine. Planted by Ferdinand Magellan himself upon his arrival in 1521, this cross symbolizes the introduction of Christianity to the Philippines – an event that forever changed Filipino history and culture. In Bohol province lies another fascinating ruin known as Chocolate Hills.
These unique geological formations consist of more than 1,200 perfectly cone-shaped hills spread across an area spanning around 50 square kilometers. Legend has it that these hills were formed from two giants throwing rocks at each other until they became exhausted – leaving behind what we now know as Chocolate Hills. Lastly, we cannot overlook Vigan City in Ilocos Sur which showcases well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture dating back to the 16th century.
